There are two major stages left for the completion of the move to Ethereum 2.0. These two stages are The Merge and the introduction of Shard Chains into the network. The Merge is when the Ethereum main net finally “merges” with the Beacon Chain, which is already live, signalling the end of proof of work on the network.

The introduction of Shard chains in the network will enable Ethereum to scale more efficiently by expanding its capacity to process transactions and store data. This final part will be rolled out in multiple stages with more features added over time.

The upgrade to the decentralised blockchain-based computing platform was initially slated for a 2019 release with the first phase launched on 1 December 2020. The first phase, known as Beacon Chain, introduced the staking concept to Ethereum but cannot be used until other parts of the transition go live.

According to the Ethereum road map and significant data merging of the Ethereum 1.0. with Ethereum 2.0. scheduled to take place in 2022.

In recent news, developers Tim Beiko and James Hancock announced a June 2022 release date for Eth2. This is when the transition from proof-of-work (PoW) algorithms towards a proof-of-stake (PoS) model is set to be complete.
